美國《華爾街日報》網站5月28日報導前美軍太平洋司令部司令鄧尼斯·布雷爾指責美國在應對中國在南中國海的行動上玩「打鼴鼠戰術」，並呼籲採取外交協調，而非軍事行動。
在談到美國軍方官員最近就南中國海緊張局勢發表的一系列言論時，他說：「我認為這太可怕了。 我們不應讓航母進入該地區。 ”
2001年，一架中國戰機與一架美國間諜飛機發生相撞，布雷爾當時擔任美軍太平洋司令部司令。
5月28日，布雷爾在北京的一場能源會議間隙接受採訪時說，他在私底下已建議美國政府，鼓勵其他南中國海聲索國商討一套顧及中方立場的多邊妥協方案。
